The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has recently released their vocational education and training (VET) student outcomes report, shedding light on the post-training experiences of vocational education students in Australia.

The data indicates that the majority of learners undertake vocational education for employment-related reasons, including getting a job, gaining extra skills for their current job or as a requirement of their job. For the former, data revealed that vocational education improved their career chances: two-thirds of students who completed vocational qualifications at Certificate I level or above had improved employment outcomes post-training. This marks a notable increase of 2.6 per cent points from the previous year, demonstrating the positive impact vocational education has on students’ career prospects.

Specifically, 50.6 per cent of graduates who did not have a job prior to training successfully found employment after completing their training. Similarly, 37.8 per cent of graduates who were already employed before undertaking vocational training transitioned to better job opportunities following the completion of their course.

These findings from the NCVER report highlight the transformative power of vocational education, not only in empowering learners with the skills they need to find employment but also to facilitate career advancement and upward mobility. The data in this report underscores the effectiveness of vocational education in equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workforce and achieve their professional goals.
